 | | The Carnivorous Plant Society is a registered Charity, founded in 1978 with the aim of bringing together all those interested in carnivorous plants, both beginners and experts. Membership is open to all individuals and institutions, both amateur and professional. |
Planta Carnivora - Newsletter and Journal of the CPSThe CPS sent the Spring Edition of Planta Carnivora and the 2009 Journal to the Graphic Designer in the first week of March 2010. Unfortunately it took until the end of July to get it back for printing, despite having a set timescale in place. Further time was lost due to Lloyds TSB holding up the bank transfer to our European printer. We endeavored to keep the process to schedule, but our expectations, and ultimately yours, were not fulfilled. We have learned from this unfortunate experience and are putting measures in place to prevent it happening again. One of those measures is to bring the Journal deadline forward by 6 weeks.
Because of the delay we went ahead and posted the March Seed Bank on time, without the two Journals. At the same time we sent out a paper copy of this years events to ensure the membership were up-to-date with all the current news.
The June Seed Bank List was published and ready for posting at the beginning of June. To save on postage we delayed sending it out until the Journals were ready, as at the time we had a realistic expectation that the Journals would be ready soon after. In hindsight that proved to be a mistake. In the end we were unable to send the two out together due to a printing glitch, which meant we could not identify between the two types of membership on the packing day (postal members who get a hard copy Journal and Seed Bank List and electronic members who just receive the Journal in the post). The problem will be rectified for next time.
The Autumn Planta Carnivora was sent to the Graphic Designer at the beginning of August, and we have a promise that it will be ready for posting in October. Our expectation is to send it out in October, but we can't confirm a date yet. If that changes we will let you know, along with the reasons and actions we are taking.
Given that members have just received a Seed Bank List, we propose to publish and send out the next one in early December.
The Society has invested in, and made, a number of changes to the material we send out to the membership. But for teething problems, the service members will receive - two full colour Journal/Newsletters a year instead of one - is a big improvement on what has gone before. Postal problemsAdditionally it appears that some of the seed bank lists have been witheld by the Royal Mail. The problem here stems from the post office advising that a normal stamp would suffice; this turned out not to be the case. The CPS apologise unreservedly for this. If any members have paid additional postage to claim their copy, please get in touch with a member of the committee to request a refund.
Chelsea 2010 Once again, Chelsea was a big success and a whole lot of fun. Thanks to everybody who helped out! More news and photos coming soon (and in the meantime, thanks to Barry Wood for the picture opposite).

The benefits of becoming a member of The Society are : | | | The CPS Seed Bank: Our Seed Bank is one of the world's largest with many types of seed on offer to our members. As a member, you are entitled to apply for four free packets per membership year. You can also apply for an extra two packets at the cost of £1 in the same membership year. By donating seed to the Seed Bank, you are entitled to more seed in return, again in that same membership year. Other items, to help you grow your plants, are also available through the Seed Bank Manager. | | | | The CPS Website: Here you will find all the latest Society news. There is information about forthcoming meetings, the latest seed bank list and more. There is also information about the different types of carnivorous plants with tips on how to grow them. In the Members Only Area, you will find downloads and other membership related items. | | | The CPS Journal: A colour journal is published each year. It is sent to every member with the last CPS newsletter of the year. It contains fascinating articles from members about their field trips and any new plants that are discovered. There are also articles about the different carnivorous plants that are grown. They describe the cultivation methods used and may include photographs or drawings. | | | The CPS Meetings: The society holds an AGM and an End of Season Meeting each year. There is also a member’s only visit to Kew Gardens in London. In addition, several members hold open days, where you are able to see private collections. These are great opportunities for buying and trading plants, swapping ideas and also meeting new people.
| | | The CPS News: There are four newsletters published each membership year. Each newsletter is full of information about the Society and includes the latest full or updated seed bank list. Details of meetings, conservation matters, growing tips, plant sales and wants, books, internet sites and other Society items and news are also in this CPS publication. | | | | The CPS Library: The Society has an extensive library of carnivorous plant books that members are able to borrow. | | | | The CPS Conservation: An important part of the Society is conservation. Money from our Conservation Fund is donated to other organisations and projects with the aim of protecting endangered carnivorous plants and their habitats. | | | Shows: The Society exhibits (most years) at the Chelsea Flower Show, London and also at the BBC Gardeners World Show at the NEC, Birmingham.
